A man was killed on Wednesday after the detached trailer of a semi caused a four-vehicle wreck on Interstate 25 in southern Colorado. According to authorities, the driver of a U.S. Postal Service tractor trailer was killed when his truck was struck by a loaded flatbed trailer that had detached from another semi. The postal truck was traveling northbound on the highway north of Pueblo when the trailer separated from a southbound semi and crossed the grassy median. The runaway flatbed trailer slammed into the postal truck and also collided with two smaller vehicles. The collision sparked a 10-acre fire near the roadway. There were only minor injuries reported to the people inside the smaller vehicles. The driver of the postal tractor trailer was pronounced dead at the scene. There were two people inside the truck that lost the trailer. They were not hurt. It is not clear what caused the flatbed trailer to become detached. Authorities are investigating the fatal crash.

The 65-year-old man was struck by the big rig as he rode his motorcycle through the intersection of Burbank Boulevard and Buena Vista Street. According to police, the truck driver did not see the motorcycle when he made a left turn into the intersection. The semi then struck the motorcycle and dragged it about 100 feet. Anita Gibbs, a school principal, was one of four people killed when a tractor trailer rear-ended the car she was in on Interstate 70 in Missouri. The court ruling required that the Michigan-based CenTra Trucking Company, which employed the driver of the semi involved, to pay the victim’s family $35.25 million for the crash. The lawsuit alleged that the truck driver was fatigued behind the wheel and that he had also falsified trucking logs. The crash occurred in June 2009 when a tractor trailer failed to stop and barreled into a line of stopped cars on the Will Rogers Turnpike in Oklahoma. Ten people were killed in the horrific crash. The lawsuit alleged that the operator of the truck, Associated Wholesale Grocers Inc., was at fault for inadequately training and supervising their driver before the crash. Families of the victims hope that the settlement will prompt AWG and other companies with commercial vehicles to improve their safety protocols. “Business as usual is not worth the risk,” said a family member “This is a terrible tragedy. This is something that didn’t need to happen.”

According to the California Highway Patrol, the semi was merging from State Route 154 onto State Street when the brakes failed. Neighbors have alerted rescuers that a second child might have also been inside the house at the time which has sparked a search-and-rescue mission within the crumpled home. A tractor trailer rear-ended a converted school bus as it traveled on Interstate 75 in Dooly County, Georgia, killing a man inside the bus. The crash occurred at about 4 a.m. on Monday as both vehicles traveled on the southbound lane of I-75. A man was driving the converted school bus, which he used to haul vehicle parts. A tractor trailer then slammed into the back of the bus, pushing the bus off the road and into a tree. The driver of the bus was pronounced dead at the scene. According to police the truck driver admitted to seeing the bus and that “he came up on it quicker than he thought.” The semi driver only suffered minor injuries. In 2009, Waite’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver of the tractor trailer, Mark D. Boehm, and his employer, Double D Express, Inc. In what many consider an unselfish move, the Waite family decided to accept the $1.5 million settlement in order to avoid bankrupting Double D Express and worsening the area’s already high unemployment.

More then 60,000 Volvo Tractor Trailers to be Recalled

Volvo Trucks North America will recall more than 60,000 tractor trailers in mid August due to potential steering problems. According to the government, a ball socket in the steering system has the potential to separate which could lead to the complete loss of steering control. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reported 23 crashes and two injuries involving the steering problem. The recall, which is expected to start in mid August, will affect certain 2001 to 2006 model VNL and VNM trucks.

A tractor trailer barreled into a line of cars waiting at a red light in Monroe County, Pennsylvania on Thursday, killing a woman and injuring a number of others. According to witnesses the semi had been driving erratically on Route 33 north before turning onto Route 209 and sparking the multi vehicle crash. The truck slammed into a Mini Cooper whose driver died at the scene. A number of other people whose vehicles were involved in the collision were taken to area hospitals with unspecified injuries. The driver of the big rig was so distraught, police say, that he attempted to commit suicide by running into the fire sparked by the initial crash. He has been charged with homicide by vehicle and is suspected of driving under the influence of a controlled substance. The fatal crash remains under investigation.

Two murder charges have been reinstated against Marcos Barbosa Costa, a trucker from Massachusetts whose big rig was involved in a crash last year that killed a man and his 12-year-old daughter. The murder charges were reinstated on Tuesday by a three-justice state appeals court panel in California after they found that L.A. County Superior Court Judge Lisa Lench erred in her earlier ruling to dismiss the murder charges. The decision is based on the events that led to last year’s fatal crash, which occurred as Costa drove his 25-ton, 18-wheel car hauler down the steep Angeles Crest Highway in La Cañada Flintridge, California. Despite ample warnings of failing brakes, including streams of smoke, Costa continued to drive his big rig down the steep highway. The truck’s brakes failed and the truck smashed into a small red Ford, instantly killing the two people inside.

In this case an International tanker truck rear-ended a Honda Civic on Saturday afternoon, killing a 74-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Civic. The fatal crash occurred on state Routes 2005 and 2022 intersection in Covington, Pennsylvania. Two others in the Civic, a woman and a five-year-old child, were also injured. The child was air-lifted from the scene. According to state police, the Civic had stopped because of traffic when it was struck from behind by the tanker truck. The force of the collision was so strong, that the car was pushed forward about 100 feet. The driver of the truck was not injured. An investigation in to the fatal crash is pending.

A wrongful death lawsuit was filed on behalf of the surviving family of a bicyclist who was killed in a collision with a truck last year in Maryland. The fatal accident occurred on Aug. 4, 2009, when 67-year-old John R. Yates got caught in a tractor trailer’s rear wheels as he rode his bike south on Maryland Avenue. Yates, died at the scene. According to a police investigation of the crash, Yates was at fault because he was riding in the parking lanes when he tried to pass the truck. On Thursday afternoon, a commercial tanker and shuttle bus collided in Springfield, Ohio. Four people were killed and another seven were sent to area hospitals for treatment.

The collision occurred after a Mack commercial truck lost control as it traveled westbound on Interstate 70 at State Route 40. The truck jackknifed and swerved over the median before hitting a passenger car and smashing into the bus, which was carrying nine passengers and the driver.

The driver of the bus was killed, as well as three other passengers. They were pronounced deceased at the scene. The other passengers of the motor coach bus were taken to hospitals with unspecified injuries. The driver of the tanker was also taken to an area hospital for minor injuries, officials said.

Officials investigating the fatal collision have not yet said if weather was a factor in the crash. At the time, many parts of Ohio were covered in up to 12 centimeters of snow.

The shuttle bus, a Chevrolet 17-seat motor coach, was en route to an assisted living facility. It was returning from Creative Learning Workshop, a center that provides vocational services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, when the crash occurred.
