Aeromexico Flight 2431 Crashed Shortly After Takeoff in Durango
Flight AM2431 crashed immediately after takeoff at around 4:00 pm local time at General Guadalupe Victoria International Airport. According to multiple passengers, the plane appeared to be battling heavy wind and rain as it hit the ground twice before coming to a stop off the edge of the runway. Passenger Ashley Garcia noted that the wings were shaking prior to takeoff.
“I was like: We are not about to take off. This is insane,” she said.
All 103 people on board evacuated using emergency slides, escaping the airplane before it was engulfed in flames.
The Embraer 190 carried 99 passengers—including 9 children and 2 infants—and 4 crewmembers. Of those, dozens were injured, with at least two in critical condition.
According to the U.S. State Department, at least 65 U.S. citizens were aboard AM2431.
Embraer 190 Plane Attempted Takeoff in Stormy Weather
Durango Governor Jose Rosas Aispuro said weather might have been a factor in the crash, noting the heavy winds at the time the plane took off. Some passengers told news outlets they did not think the plane would leave, given the severe weather, and were surprised when the plane began taxiing.
The aircraft was manufactured by Embraer and has been in Aeromexico’s fleet since 2014.
